Engineered Timber Wear Layer and Board Thickness Explained

Wear layer thickness matters, but it should be assessed with the board's overall construction, dimensions, finish, core stability, installation method and intended use.

The wear layer is the real timber surface

The wear layer is the visible timber above the engineered core. Its thickness can influence the scope for future sanding, but the number of possible refinishes cannot be determined from one number alone.

Surface texture, factory finish, bevels, product condition and the sanding process also affect what may be practical later.

Overall board construction matters as well

A board should be assessed as a complete system: wear layer, total thickness, core construction, dimensions, profile, finish and manufacturing tolerances. A thicker specification is not automatically the better fit for every project.

The construction needs to suit the substrate, installation method, room conditions and adjoining finishes.

  • Compare total thickness as well as wear layer thickness.
  • Review board width and length against setout and substrate flatness.
  • Check the exact installation and maintenance documentation.

Use the project details to compare products

For renovations, finished floor height can affect doors, stairs, tiles and cabinetry. For wide-plank floors, substrate tolerance, board stability and setout become especially important.

Compare shortlisted products using the same criteria rather than selecting from colour samples alone.
